The handles have a square shaft that seem to be somehow attached or pinned to the lock mechanism inside the door. How do they come out?

try this....

forums.aaca.org/f120/how-take-off-door-handle-37-a-295498.html

the pin itself should be about 1/8 inch in diameter. should push out fairly quickly... its located between the handle and the plastic/bakelight escutcheon..

the pin should have a chamfered end, if at first you don't succeed, spin it round 180deg, and try from the other side.

there is a cool tool you can buy, from auto tool suppliers, that looks a bit like a 3 pronged fork . two outside prongs to guide the middle one to push out the pin

luck Al

Thanks, Al, but my problem is the exterior door handles. Do you know how to get those off?

hi Bruce,

sorry for the delay have only just come back to this..

Plymouth of this year have a screw . you will need to take of the interior door trim to see it .
it should be visible on the end of the square shaft that comes through from the outside handle.
remove that screw, and give the shaft a light tap using a nail punch and hammer - that should free up years of crud enough that it should wiggle out freely after that ..
you could also try a bit of crc, wd40 or similar . unless its really badly corroded it shouldn't too much of a mission..

hope that helps

Thanks, Alex, but the Dodge mechanism is different. No need to remove the door panel, just push in the latch and wiggle the outside handle and it will come out. Remove the two handle trim screws first.

BTW, I didn't figure this out on my own. Thank you AACA!
