Please can anybody advise me whether the rear axle outer bearing retainer threads, in the ends of the axle housing, are left-hand / right-hand threaded side to side. I have to remove the castellated bearing retainers to access the inner seals – because axle grease is leaking all over the rear brakes!
I have removed the clamp bolt, (dduuhhh…), and made a special tool from thick-walled steel tube, but the retainer will not move. The visible threads on my car are so worn I cannot tell, looking at either side, if they are left-hand or right-hand threads.

I just put my rear axle back together. It's a 25 and both sides are right hand threaded. Try using in some PB Blaster or WD40 then use a drift and hammer to tap it loose. You can catch the slots with the drift. Jay

Not this one! :) The right side spun straight out but the left is absolutely immovable. I made a special tool from thick-walled 3.75" od 4140 tube, with four prongs on it to locate in the slots, welded to a big 3/4" drive socket. I have tried all kinds of heat, an impact gun, and a breaker bar with a 5 foot extension on it and it will not move. I think someone has either epoxied or loctited it in - although I can't see any evidence. I have never seen anything stuck so solid in my life. I have to get it out because the axle has 0.100" of end-float and the inner seals are shot.

So, does anybody have a spare retainer, (pictured)? Before I get medieval on it...
