Post subject:  ignition coil

the ignition coil on my 29 truck is behind the dash with the ignition switch mounted to the coil. It has three posts on it one marked batt, the other marked timer and the third unmarked. Using an 8 volt battery I have 8.5 volts to the battery side of the coil, with the switch on I have .25 volts to the timer post and the third post has 8.58 volts. So I believe my coil has failed but is there any reason I could not hook the coil wire and power wire to the third post and still have it operate?

I am curious what model truck you have. Is it a 6 cly engine?
My truck is an "E" series 3/4 ton and the coil is on the firewall.
